The documentary, which follows Parkinson's battler Larry Smith as he bicycles through the state of South Dakota, is being hometown screened within the context of Parkinson's Awareness Month. Joining Lewis will be representatives from Scripps Hospital, the Parkinson's Association of San Diego and the medical marijuana lobby.
Per an early review by FOX 5 San Diego film critic Josh Board, that last realm - medical marijuana - is highlighted in the film in a most effective way:
Ride with Larry tells the story of a 26-year police captain who was forced to retire when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. He took his love of baking from being a hobby, into a business, and started the successful Mister Smith’s Bakery. Everyone in the community loves his spirit (and his bread)...
I may have used an entire box of tissues watching this. At times that was listening to Larry say something inspirational. Other times, it was listening to his wife talk about their times together and their sometimes difficult adventure... There comes a point in the movie when they fly to San Diego for some medical marijuana. It’ll be a rather persuasive portion of the movie for anybody that’s against the legalization.
Proceeds from Sunday's screenings will go to the Parkinson's Association, San Diego Chapter; Americans for Safe Access; and Scripps Hospital's Summit4StemCell research project.
